Oil City Info

What is Oil City?

Oil City, Washington is a remote and historic community on the western edge of the Olympic Peninsula, nestled near the coast and adjacent to Olympic National Park. Its unusual history began in the early 1900s, when oil was discovered in the area and the community was platted with hopes that it would develop into a thriving oil town. Lots were sold to people who believed the discovery would bring prosperity, but the oil deposits proved too limited to support commercial development, and the planned town was largely abandoned, with limited road access.

In the early 2000s, road access was privately expanded, making it easier for lot owners to reach the community. Today, Oil City remains rustic and secluded, with a small collection of cabins and campsites surrounded by the wild landscapes of the Washington coast. It has become a haven for people seeking solitude and outdoor recreation, including hiking, mushroom picking, camping, fishing, and exploring the nearby Pacific coastline and surfing areas. Its combination of history, remoteness, and access to some of Washington's most spectacular wilderness makes Oil City a unique and memorable corner of the Olympic Peninsula.

Oil City Landowners Association

The Oil City Landowners Association (OCLA) is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization representing property owners in the historic community of Oil City, Washington.

OCLA’s primary role is to coordinate private road access and maintenance within Oil City. Because the roads serving the community cross timber company lands, OCLA works directly with the timber companies to negotiate and administer road use agreements that provide landowners with legal access to their properties. This involves coordinating and paying for road maintenance, access requirements, insurance, fees, and other administrative matters affecting the community.

By bringing landowners together and managing these shared responsibilities collectively, OCLA helps preserve reliable access to Oil City while supporting the community’s unique character and continued use as a remote recreational community.
